The Mission (1986), directed by British director Roland Joffé, is a remarkably beautiful film set in the rainforests of interior South America during the 18th century. Based on the real missions that Spanish Jesuits established in what is now Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina, the film explores the often blurred boundary between the Church and the World. Extraordinary performances from Jeremy Irons and Robert de Niro (in a somewhat surprising role) as well as the magnificent musical score by Ennio Morricone mark this film out as truly unforgettable.
